E-2 Satellite Communications (SATCOM)

E-2 design requirements include the ability to report, at a minimum, daily GPS position data from the field. It is also highly desirable for the ground control station to be able to command the vehicle remotely, and/or retrieve science data. Satellite communications are mandatory for this function.

Available options, in ascending order of functionality and cost, are:

  • Argos DCS. Short message, uplink only, unverified, and administrative/legal restrictions on usage.
  • Messaging services such as Inmarsat D+ or mini-C. Short message, bidirectional, delivery verification.
  • Full-rate VSAT data-capable or data-only services such as Inmarsat mini-M or R-BGAN, ranging from 2400bps to broadband speeds.
