E-2 Phase 2 Project Goals

Phase 2's primary goals are:

  1. To be capable of maneuvering on the surface and at depths up to 30m.
  2. To navigate autonomously from a shore launch site to a predesignated zone of interest at least 50km from the launch point.
  3. To remain on station, within a 500m radius, with a fixed error factor determined by active GPS Selective Availability features in the target area during the mission.
  4. To operate without physical intervention or assistance for 365 consecutive days with an average uptime ratio of approximately 33% (120 uptime days). An uptime day is defined as any period from 00:00 to 23:59, local time, during which the vehicle spends at least six consecutive hours submerged to a depth of at least 10m.
  5. To return daily GPS position data, at minimum, to a shore monitoring station via a satellite telemetry channel.
  6. To achieve all primary goals within a cost budget of US$25,000 for bill-of-materials, engineering, tools and testing, plus a further $2,000 for ongoing expenses (e.g. satellite communications fees).

A secondary goal is for the vehicle to navigate back to the launch point for recovery after the mission is complete. However, recovery is not an essential goal; vehicle loss after completing primary goals is acceptable.
