Glossary

It's very difficult to avoid developing a specialized jargon when working on a project as complex as this one. It's simply much faster to refer to an object by way of an acronym when no succinct word already exists in the English language.

Word Description
EDL Engineering Data Log. Recorded system health information and other engineering data (battery voltage, solar cell output, air bottle pressure, ambient pressure, and so on). In Phase 2 this log is used primarily for post-analysis.
ERB Emergency Recovery Beacon. An acoustic and visual beacon, powered independently of the main vehicle power bus. Similar in function to the "pinger" fitted to aircraft flight data recorders.
SCM Science Control Module. A non-realtime or soft-realtime controller responsible for science activities such as imaging, visual navigation and so forth. All science data is recorded through the SCM (although some of it may originate in the VCM).
SDL Science Data Log. Recorded science information captured by the SCM. This log is the "cargo" of the E-2 vehicle. It is not relevant to navigation or vehicle health, so the SDL is not directly accessible to the VCM.
VCM Vehicle Control Module. This is the realtime controller that powers up the SCM when appropriate, interfaces with all sensors and actuators and manages navigation, depth maintenance and power systems (among other functions). All engineering data originates from the VCM.
